Ilgar Fehmi’s play “Shah Abbasnameh” is dedicated to the life of the great Safavid ruler Shah Abbas, his struggle for statehood, and his efforts to save the Safavid dynasty from collapse, revive it, and turn it into a vast empire.
The play focuses on a stage of Shah Abbas’s 42-year reign. The central theme revolves around his resolution of palace conflicts, suppression of feudal rebellions, resistance against foreign invasions, reclamation of previously occupied lands, and his strengthening of the Safavid state into the most powerful empire in the East.
The first act is titled “Chess”, and it depicts palace struggles during Shah Abbas’s ascent to the throne.
The second act, “Scent of Blood”, explores how, in the early years of his rule, Shah Abbas quelled feudal uprisings.
The third act, “Dungeon”, portrays Shah Abbas’s victories in wars to reclaim lost territories of the Safavid state and the events that followed.
The fourth act is titled “Heir to the Throne”. It reflects the dramatic developments surrounding Shah Abbas’s decision to appoint a sole successor from among his many potential heirs in the final years of his life.
The play’s plot centers on the ruler’s struggle to build a strong and powerful state, the countless sacrifices made, and the inner torment he endured.
The main message of the play is that it is impossible to protect the homeland without loving it.
